Our Church

We are a diverse and growing church community that truly has open doors, open hearts and open minds. We honor and value each person for who they are and their God given talents. Nelson UMC is a place to worship, grow spiritually, experience faith and practice committed Christian fellowship. Nelson UMC is steeped in programs and flourishes in fellowship. We continually strive to follow this vision of ministry through a multitude of programs, outreach, missions, evangelism, our music and the people of God’s Kingdom.
We are not a typical rural country church that draws its members from a small local area. Rather, we are a medium sized growing community church that draws worshipers from many areas in Nelson as well as Amherst County. We welcome people into the fellowship of Jesus Christ; seek to provide an accessible space; create an understanding of church as a place of joy, healing and acceptance; and experience Nelson as a place where others can explore their faith in a spiritually alive atmosphere.
Our church is continually looking for and evaluating and engaging in mission projects. Current missions include:
– Nelson Kid Care backpack ministry
– Stop Hunger Now
– Tarua mission in El Salvador
– Gateway sober living house Lynchburg
– Gleaning events
– Society of Saint Andrew
– Medical mission trips in other countries
– Local repairs in the community
– Disaster relief efforts at home and abroad
– Served as Emergency shelter
– Host community events
– Feeding local sports teams
– Nelson County Food Pantry
The theology of our congregation is moderate and very diverse but differing views are respected and encouraged. Church members have learned to expect the unexpected and find creative solutions to difficult problems. The congregation is very warm and caring towards others and to those in need in the community. Members reach out to, and welcome, community members with out a church home, providing space for learning, exploring, and coming to faith in a non-judgmental or threatening environment.
The mission of Nelson UMC is “To glorify God and make new disciples for Jesus Christ.” We strive to create a sense of home and belonging to everyone who comes through our doors. We see each member’s role in our church as important to God’s unfolding plan of ministry in our community therefore, all people who worship at NUMC are offered opportunities to get involved in some aspect of the ministry of the church, and new ideas are invited and encouraged.

Our Ministry Team

Our leadership team recognizes the authority of God, and realizes that we are shepherds who serve under the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ. We desire to devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word. Our passion and goal is to equip the believers for the work of the ministry until we all attain maturity in the fullness of Christ.

David Solar, Office Assistant

Welcome! I am the church’s office assistant and help with many different jobs every week and assist the Pastor in whatever way that I can. This includes putting together the bulletins, managing office supplies and making sure the building is safe and tidy, If you want to know where something is, I usually can find it for you! I also send out a weekly newsletter to our shut-ins in our church and family members of church members who can’t get around on their own. I enjoy putting together The Beacon II. I also am responsible for tracking attendance for Sunday services. I would like to invite you to come and be our guest one Sunday – I think you will like it here!
