At Nelson UMC, we challenge ourselves to a greater vision, we choose to make a difference not only in our own lives but compassionately in the lives of others. We choose to be loving and kind to everyone and pursue the courage to be open and experience unity with God.
“U-n-i-t-y” are the last five letters in the word community and we focus on sharing all of our member’s God-given talents and abilities towards making Nelson County and the families who live here, the best they can be.
There are no strangers at Nelson United Methodist Church, only friends who haven’t met yet…. so we welcome YOU to join us in worship this Sunday morning! We really do have a seat for YOU!

Pastor Liz Buxton comes to Nelson UMC after seventeen years and three previous appointments in the Virginia Conference. Liz has a BS in Sociology from Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri, a Masters in Theology from the School of Theology at Claremont, California, an Elementary Education teaching credential from UCLA, and her M.Div. from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Liz has worked and lived in many different places and learned that most folks have a lot more in common than not and most of our differences just make life interesting. Ministry interests include but are not limited to children’s ministry, women in theology and the church, and social justice.
Just celebrating her 60th birthday, she has a grown son, living in Richmond, who will be thirty next year. She has been known to read a book or two, writes and leads a women’s retreat every fall, and is so very, very not technologically/ digitally inclined. Last but not least, she looks forward to getting to know all of you and is excited about our next chapter together.
